To present her second collection for Blind Foresight, an accessible capsule to the designer’s namesake mainline label, which she debuted at London Fashion Week in February, Paria Farzaneh took audiences to Brockley in South East London.
“There is a lot of pressure from the industry to do a certain thing and be a certain person,” says Paria, “so I wanted to be somewhere and do something that felt natural to me. Our studio is just around the corner and this is a place where I feel most myself.”
In a space nestled down in Ashby Mews, friends, family and fans alike gathered to preview the collection and come together. This feeling of community has always been central to the Iranian-Britsh designer’s works, who sees herself as somewhat of a fashion outsider.
“At school, I’d be called Pariah and I’d say, no it’s Paria.” Pariah directly means outcast in the English dictionary, while Paria translates to fairy-like in the designer's native tongue of Farsi, “I guess, I weirdly kind of represent both of those things.”
The designer grew up in Hull and moved to London to study at Ravensbourne University. Since 2017, Paria has built her brand paria/FARZANEH through a fiercely independent exploration of her Iranian heritage. Using cuts, drapes and (sometimes traditional) prints to tell her own story which blends the two distinctly different worlds that have informed her life. Her latest collection features a series of bespoke items that use screen printing, Iranian cotton panelling, traditional print motifs, lace and technical fabrics to further her narrative.
“From the beginning, I’ve wanted to portray how I feel and show my reality to the people around me. I want my work to resonate with those closest to me and those that perhaps aren't,” she says. “Blind Foresight is for those who appreciate quality and craft but at a more accessible price point. If my mum, dad, sister or friends can't buy it then what's the point.”
The collection is available to buy today exclusively at pariafarzaneh.com and on Ashby Mews until Sunday, June 18th (see @pariafarzaneh for address details)
